Abstract

Social protection programs like cash transfers potentially reduce water poverty and enhance security by targeting poor households with financial support to improve WASH services access in low- and middle-income countries. Limited understanding exists regarding cash transfer and household water security linkages. This scoping review synthesized existing literature on these connections. Eight peer-reviewed studies met inclusion criteria from multiple databases. Findings revealed positive linkages at household level through capacity building, behavior change, economic empowerment, and facilitating social capital for communal activities. While further research is necessary, evidence suggests social protection programs strengthen water security interventions in resource-poor settings, offering pathways for developing effective WASH policies promoting welfare and well-being for marginalized populations.
